Welcome to Stephen Hopper Fine Art
Born in Alnwick, Northumberland, I have lived and worked in Wales for the past decade, embracing its landscape, culture, and history. I trained at Liverpool Art School under leading realist painters Henri, Cockerill, Walsh, and Baum. I established my art studio in Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant following a career as an art director in advertising and design. These diverse professional experiences inform both the conceptual and material foundations of my work.
Landscape: A Living Process
My landscape paintings emerge from direct, lived experience. I explore places shaped by time, myth, and human presence, where landscape becomes both physical and psychological. Through impasto, vigorous brushwork, and a palette grounded in earth tones and vivid primaries, I combine physical weight with movement, colour, and mood.
My oil painting of Llyn Idwal, entitled The Silence of the Lake, references the haunting myth of a murdered Welsh prince, a lake where no birdsong can be heard, and geological explorations by Charles Darwin, who proclaimed he could “read the rocks.”
Portraiture: A Meeting of Minds
My portraiture moves beyond representation to explore psychological presence. Through abstraction, tonal distortion, and compositional tension, I seek to reveal an inner life shaped by memory and experience. For me, this process is a ‘meeting of minds.’
My portrait of Welsh poet R. S. Thomas reflects his emotional landscape following the death of his wife, the artist Elsie Eldridge, engaging with themes of grief, memory, and human connection.
My art seeks to reveal the unseen narratives embedded in landscape and human presence, inviting viewers into moments of stillness, memory, and psychological depth. I am inspired by the works of Turner, Samuel Palmer, Piper, Nash, Kyffin Williams, Casper David Friedrich, and Hubert Roestenburg.
I have work held in private collections internationally across Europe, North America, Australasia, and the United Kingdom, which continues to evolve steadily.
Recent events
In 2024, my historical portrait of Sir Henry Percy (Harry Hotspur) was unveiled in the Great Hall, Alnwick Castle, the seat of His Grace the Duke of Northumberland. Later, it was unveiled at the Battlefield Church, Shrewsbury, as part of the Battle of Shrewsbury commemorations.
In 2025, my portraits of Welsh poet RS Thomas and Saint Melangell were unveiled during the RS Thomas Festival in Aberdaron and at the pilgrim shrine church of St Melangell, respectively. The Thomas portrait was also exhibited at the Brecon Choir Festival in July and at Bangor Cathedral in September.
